Tree Felling Guys grinding a tree stump in a Gauteng garden

Stump Grinding and Removal in Gauteng

Stump grinding and removal is what we do when the tree is gone but the stump is still in your way. We either grind the stump down below ground level so you can lay lawn, pave, or plant over it, or dig the whole thing out roots and all. Tree Felling Guys handles both, clears the mess, and leaves the spot ready to use.

We work across Gauteng, so whether the stump is in a Centurion garden, a Sandton complex, or a Randburg plot, we can get to it. We have done this for 10 years, we are fully insured, and we tell you honestly whether grinding or full removal is the right call for what you plan to do with the space.

What Is Stump Grinding, and How Is It Different From Full Removal?

Stump grinding uses a machine to chew the stump down into wood chips, from the top down to below ground level, leaving the deeper roots in place to rot away naturally. It is quick, it is less disruptive to your garden, and it is the most common way to get rid of a stump.

Full stump removal pulls the entire stump and its main root system out of the ground. It leaves a bigger hole and takes more work, but it is the right choice when you are building, laying a foundation, or need the ground completely clear of roots. Most people only need grinding. We will tell you which one your job actually needs.

Should You Grind the Stump or Remove It Fully?

For most gardens, grinding is enough. If you just want the stump gone so you can mow over it, plant grass, or tidy up the space, grinding is faster and cheaper and does the job.

Choose full removal when the roots are the problem, not just the stump: when you are paving or building over the spot, when roots are lifting a wall or driveway, or when you want to replant a new tree in the exact same place. When you are not sure, our arborist can look at what the roots are doing and give you a straight answer.

How Much Does Stump Grinding and Removal Cost?

Stump grinding in Gauteng usually runs from about R500 for a small stump to R4,500 or more for a large hardwood one. Full removal, where the stump is dug out roots and all, costs more. Price comes down mostly to the diameter of the stump and how easy it is to reach.

ServiceTypical stump sizeTypical Gauteng price

Medium stump grindingAbout 30cm to 60cmR1,500 to R2,500

Got several stumps? We usually discount when we grind more than one in the same visit. For how stump costs fit alongside the felling job, see our full tree felling prices page.

What Affects the Price of Stump Grinding?

Size is the biggest factor, since a wider stump means more grinding time. Hardwoods like oak cost more than softer woods because they are denser and slower to grind. Access matters too, so a stump behind a narrow gate or up a slope takes longer to reach. And hidden rubble, stones, or concrete around the stump can slow the job or risk the machine, which is why we check before we start. If you want the wood chips hauled away rather than left to fill the hole, we handle that as green waste removal.

Why You Should Not Leave a Stump in the Ground

Stump removal job by Tree Felling Guys in Gauteng

A leftover stump is not just untidy. It is a trip hazard, it gets in the way of mowing, and it can attract termites and other pests that you would rather not have near your house. Some stumps also send up new shoots and try to regrow, which means the tree you paid to remove starts coming back.

Grinding kills off the visible stump and stops most regrowth, and it turns dead space back into usable garden. It is a small job that finishes off a felling properly, which is why we usually recommend doing it at the same time as the tree removal.

What Is Left After Grinding?

You are left with a shallow, chip-filled depression where the stump was, ground down to roughly 15cm to 30cm below the surface, deeper if you are replanting or paving. We can rake the chips back to fill the hole, or clear them away and leave you clean soil to work with. Either way the trip hazard is gone and the space is yours again.

Stump Grinding FAQ

Is it better to grind a stump or remove it?

expand_more

For most gardens, grinding is better: it is faster, cheaper, and less disruptive, and it lets you plant or pave over the spot. Full removal is better when you need the roots gone too, such as before building or when roots are lifting a wall. We will tell you which your job needs.

How much does stump grinding cost?

expand_more

Small stump grinding runs about R500 to R1,500. Larger stumps, hardwoods, or difficult access run R1,500 to R4,500 or more. Full removal, where the stump is dug out, usually costs more than grinding.

Will the tree grow back if I grind the stump?

expand_more

Usually not. Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root system, which stops most trees regrowing. A few species can still send up shoots from the roots, so if that happens we can treat or clear them.

How deep do you grind a stump?

expand_more

Typically 15cm to 30cm below ground level, which is enough for lawn and general use. If you are paving or replanting, we grind deeper so the roots are well clear.

Do you remove the wood chips?

expand_more

Your choice. We can rake the chips back to fill the hole, or haul them away and leave you clean soil. Clearing them away is handled as green waste removal.

Can you grind several stumps for a better price?

expand_more

Yes. When we grind more than one stump in the same visit, we usually discount the total, so it is worth doing them together.

Can I grind a stump myself?

expand_more

You can hire a machine, but stump grinders are heavy, awkward to control, and hidden rubble or roots can damage the machine or cause injury. For anything beyond a small, soft stump, it is safer and usually cheaper to have it done properly.
