Tree felling and removal
We take trees down whole where there is room, and rope them down in sections where there is not. The wood and branches leave with us. See our tree felling and removal service.
For tree felling, Midrand homeowners, estates and smallholding owners call Tree Felling Guys: we cut down, remove and clear dangerous, dead and unwanted trees, then leave the site clean. Whether a gum tree hangs over your roof in Carlswald, a dead tree leans towards your wall in Vorna Valley or a plot in Kyalami needs a row of big trees cleared, we cover all of Midrand. We have 10 years of experience, we are fully insured, and you get a written, itemised quote before we start.
We rope big trees down in sections, so nothing lands on your house, wall, electric fence or cables. Google reviewers rate us 5.0 stars, and we charge no travel fee in Midrand.
We handle every tree job in Midrand, from one dead tree in a townhouse garden to clearing a whole smallholding.
We take trees down whole where there is room, and rope them down in sections where there is not. The wood and branches leave with us. See our tree felling and removal service.
We grind the stump below ground so you can pave, plant or lay lawn over the spot. See our stump grinding and removal service.
We lift branches off roofs, thin heavy crowns and cut branches back from cables and electric fences. See our tree trimming and pruning service.
We answer 24/7 for fallen and storm-damaged trees, and reach Midrand the same day. See our emergency tree felling service.

We strip dead fronds and seed pods, or remove the whole palm, including tall palms at estate entrances and along driveways. See our palm tree removal and trimming service.
We trim and shape hedges along boundary walls, driveways and estate frontages. See our hedge trimming service.
We clear trees, bush and undergrowth from smallholdings and building plots before you build or landscape. See our land and site clearing service.
We remove invasive trees such as gum trees and wattle, so they stop spreading across your property. See our alien and invasive tree removal service.
We plant a new tree after a removal, or move an existing tree to a better spot. See our tree planting and transplanting service.
We haul away garden refuse, branches and cuttings, and chip wood on site. See our garden refuse and green waste removal service.
We look after the trees in estates, complexes and business parks on a regular schedule, with a written quote the HOA or managing agent can approve. See our estate and commercial tree maintenance service.
Tree felling in Midrand costs from about R850 for a small, easy tree to R25,000 or more for a large or dangerous one. Most home jobs land between R2,500 and R12,000. Midrand falls inside the City of Johannesburg, where we charge no travel fee.
| Tree size | Typical height | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Small tree | Up to 5m | R850 to R2,500 |
| Medium tree | 5m to 10m | R2,500 to R6,500 |
| Large tree | 10m to 20m | R6,500 to R15,000 |
| Extra-large tree | 20m and above | R15,000 to R25,000+ |
Stump grinding adds R500 to R4,500 or more, and we charge the same rates for emergencies, with no after-hours surcharge.
On Midrand jobs, four things usually move the final cost within those ranges:

Midrand has two kinds of tree jobs that most of Johannesburg does not: tight work inside security estates, and big multi-tree jobs on smallholdings.
Estates such as Waterfall, Carlswald and Blue Hills set their own rules for contractors. Most want the homeowners' association or managing agent to approve tree work, register contractors at the gate, and limit the days and hours we can work.
We fit in with that. Tell us the estate's rules when you book, and we send a written, itemised quote the HOA or trustees can approve. We rope trees down in sections, so shared walls, paving and parked cars stay safe, and we leave the street and common areas clean.
Kyalami, Glen Austin, Blue Hills and Randjesfontein still have large plots, many with rows of big, old trees along the boundaries and driveways. Clearing a plot like that is a different job from removing one tree in a garden.
We quote the whole plot in one written quote, fell the trees, chip the branches, haul the wood away and grind the stumps if you want them gone. Before we cut, we check for indigenous trees that the law protects.
Most estate and complex trees have no room to drop. We rig and lower them in sections, so the wood comes down on a rope instead of falling near a roof, wall or electric fence.
Midrand falls under the City of Johannesburg, and three rules matter.
Street trees belong to the City. A tree on the pavement outside your wall is municipal property. Under the City's street tree bylaws, only Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo may remove, prune or maintain it, and fines for damaging one run up to R327,000 per tree. Report a dangerous street tree to City Parks on 011 712 6600 or Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555.
Protected trees need a licence. Section 15 of the National Forests Act, 1998 bans cutting, damaging or removing a protected tree, such as the marula, the camel thorn or the shepherd's tree, without a licence from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
Your estate may have its own rules. Check with your HOA or managing agent before any tree on common property, or close to a boundary, comes down.
A tree in your own garden that is not protected needs no municipal permit.
When there is room to drop a tree, we use the standard three cuts. The notch sets the direction of fall, the hinge steers it, and the back cut releases it, while the team keeps clear escape routes.
Yes. The Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria lists Midrand as a confirmed area for the polyphagous shot hole borer. The beetle is about 2mm long and carries a fungus that blocks the tree's flow of water and nutrients, which leads to branch dieback and can kill the tree.
Look for these signs on your trees:
FABI advises removing heavily infested trees, chipping the wood and never moving firewood out of the infested area. If you spot these signs, book an arborist check before a dead branch comes down on your roof or car.
We fell trees across Midrand, including Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Carlswald, Vorna Valley, Noordwyk, Crowthorne, Country View, Glen Austin, Blue Hills, Kyalami, Randjesfontein and Waterfall.
We also cover the suburbs on either side of Midrand, from Sandton and Fourways in the south to Centurion in the north. Midrand is part of our wider tree felling Johannesburg service area. For everything else we do, see our main page on tree felling in Gauteng.
Big branches come off in three cuts, not one. The undercut stops the bark tearing, the top cut drops the branch, and the final cut just outside the branch collar lets the wound heal cleanly.

You need a licence to cut a protected tree, and only Johannesburg City Parks may prune or remove a street tree. In an estate, get approval from your HOA or managing agent too.

Yes. We quote the whole plot in one written quote, then fell, chip, haul away and grind stumps as needed. We check for protected trees before we cut.
The dry winter months are usually best, because leafless trees are lighter and easier to handle. A dangerous tree should come down straight away, whatever the month.
