Tree felling in Randburg is a local job for Tree Felling Guys. Our yard is in Cosmo City at the top of Malibongwe Drive, which puts every Randburg suburb within a short drive of our crew and chipper. If a tree on your property has to come down, we take it down, cart it off, and deal with the stump and the mess in the same visit.

Wherever you are in Randburg, from the old tree-lined streets of Blairgowrie, Ferndale, and Linden to the complexes and newer homes in Boskruin, Sundowner, and Olivedale, we know the roads and we know the properties. Randburg gardens are tight, the trees are often older than the houses next to them, and the neighbour's wall is never far away. That is the kind of work we do every week.

Ten years of tree felling across Gauteng is behind every quote we give, and every job is covered by our public liability insurance. A Randburg tree is priced from photos you send or a visit we make, never from a guess over the phone, and you get the number in writing. Then the crew arrives, does what the quote says, and leaves you a garden with no branches in it.

The Old Randburg: Big Trees, Small Stands

Blairgowrie, Ferndale, Linden, Bordeaux, Fontainebleau, Windsor, Darrenwood, Robindale, and Cresta were laid out in the 1950s and 60s on standard suburban stands. The trees planted back then, jacarandas, planes, pin oaks, pines, and the odd giant gum tree, are now 20 metres tall on properties that were never designed for a tree that size. The root plate has spread under the driveway, the lower limbs sit on the gutters, and half the crown belongs, in practice, to the people next door.

A tree like that does not get felled, it gets taken apart. Our climber goes up with the ropes, cuts the crown out limb by limb with each piece tied off and lowered by the ground crew, then rings the trunk down in short lengths until only the stump is left. It is a slower day than dropping a tree in open ground, but on a Randburg stand it is the only method that keeps the branches off the neighbour's roof and clear of the overhead lines that still run down half the streets in Ferndale and Windsor.

If the tree is healthy and you just need it off the roof or out of the gutters, tree trimming and crown reduction is often the better answer, and cheaper. Our arborist can tell you which it should be.

Is Your Randburg Tree Ready to Come Down?

Many of the trees planted when these suburbs were built are now 60 years old or more, which is the end of the road for a jacaranda or a pine on a suburban stand. The signs we look for on a Randburg call-out are a lean that has got worse since last summer, soil that has cracked or lifted on one side of the trunk, big dead limbs in the top of the crown, a split where two main stems join, and roots that have reached the foundations or the sewer line. One of those is a reason to get it looked at. Two or more, and the tree is usually a removal, not a pruning job.

The Newer Randburg: Complexes, Townhouses, and Small Gardens

North of Beyers Naudé and up towards the N1 the picture changes. Boskruin, Bromhof, Sundowner, Northwold, Olivedale, Sharonlea, Jukskei Park, Bloubosrand, and North Riding are mostly townhouse complexes and newer freestanding homes. The trees are younger, but they were planted close to walls, paving, and pools, and twenty years on they are cracking driveways and pushing over precast panels.

Complex work means body corporate rules, gate access, working hours, and a clean-up standard the trustees will check. We handle all of that. Trustees and managing agents who would rather have the common property trees on a maintenance schedule than deal with them one emergency at a time can read about our estate and commercial tree maintenance work.

Tree Felling Prices in Randburg

The first thing that keeps a Randburg quote down is that we are not driving from Pretoria to get to you. After that it is the tree, not the suburb: something small in an open corner can be as little as R850, while a mature Blairgowrie jacaranda coming down over a roof is a full crew for a full day. The size-based ranges are on our tree felling prices page, stump grinding is a separate line so you only pay for it if you want it, and photos or a visit gets you the written number.

The Pavement Tree Is Not Yours

One Randburg-specific warning. The tree on the verge outside your house belongs to the City of Johannesburg and is managed by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo. Removing or hard-pruning it without their sign-off can get you fined, even when its roots are lifting your driveway, and the old suburbs are full of exactly those trees. We tell you before we cut, and we can point you to the application. For trees inside your boundary, and for protected species, our permits and bylaws guide has the detail, and the neighbour question is covered on our Johannesburg tree felling page.

What Happens on the Day

A small tree in an open garden is a half-day job. A big dismantle over a roof in Blairgowrie or Linden is a full day, sometimes two, with a climber, a ground crew, and a chipper parked on the street. Most of Randburg's older roads are narrow, so we tell you in advance where the truck and chipper will stand, and it helps if you give your neighbours a heads-up the day before.

It is noisy while the saws and chipper are running, there is no way around that. In complexes we work inside the body corporate's hours, usually weekdays from eight to five, and we finish by clearing the site, chipping the branches, and taking the timber away, so the last thing you hear is the truck leaving.

Randburg customers have said it better than we can; their words are on our reviews page.

Tree Felling Randburg FAQ

How much does it cost to have a tree felled in Randburg?

expand_more

A small tree with easy access starts from around R850. A medium garden tree that can come down in a few big pieces usually lands in the low thousands. A large old jacaranda, plane, or gum tree that has to be dismantled over a roof or boundary wall, as so many in Blairgowrie, Ferndale, and Linden do, costs several thousand rand because it is a full crew for a full day. Our tree felling prices page breaks the ranges down by size, and a few photos gets you an exact written figure.

How quickly can you get to Randburg?

expand_more

Fast. We are based in Cosmo City, just up Malibongwe Drive, so a site visit is usually within a day and storm call-outs are often the same day.

Can I make my neighbour cut back their tree?

expand_more

You can cut back whatever crosses the boundary onto your side, at your cost, but you cannot force them to reduce the tree's height or remove it unless it is a proven danger. On a Randburg stand that question comes up constantly, and if the tree is a real risk our arborist can put it in writing for you.

How many branches can you cut off a tree without killing it?

expand_more

As a rule, no more than a quarter of the live canopy in one season. Taking more than that stresses the tree and invites disease. That is why we prune to a plan rather than hacking, and why "topping" is something we refuse to do.

What trees are you not allowed to cut down in Randburg?

expand_more

Trees on the national protected list need a licence under the National Forests Act, and in a Randburg garden the one you are most likely to meet is a yellowwood. Most of the big old trees in the older suburbs, jacarandas, gum trees, and syringas, are listed invasive species, not protected ones, so removing them from your own property is straightforward. The pavement tree is the exception whatever it is, because it belongs to the City. Our guide to protected and indigenous trees in South Africa has the full list.

Who is the cheapest for tree removal?

expand_more

The cheapest quote is usually cheap because something is missing from it: the clean-up, the chipping, the stump, the insurance, or the rigging that keeps a big tree off your roof. Before you compare prices, check what each quote actually includes. Ours lists all of it in writing, so you can put it next to anyone else's line by line.

Will my insurance pay if a tree damages my house?

expand_more

Many household policies cover storm damage from a falling tree, but your insurer will want photos of the damage and a written invoice or report from the tree company. Take your photos before anything is moved, then call us. We make the site safe, remove the tree, and give you the paperwork your insurer asks for.

Is clean-up included in the price?

expand_more

Yes. Every quote includes chipping the branches, cutting and removing the timber, and clearing the site. Stump grinding is the one thing quoted separately, because not everyone wants the stump out.
