Tree Felling in Sandton
Get My Free Quote arrow_forwardWe fell and remove trees across Sandton, from a dead pin oak behind a Morningside townhouse to a 25-metre gum tree leaning off a boundary wall in Sandhurst. We take the whole tree down, chip and remove every branch, grind the stump if you want it gone, and leave the paving and the pool deck exactly as we found them.
We work the whole of Sandton, from the old acre stands in Sandhurst, Hyde Park, Inanda and Illovo, through Morningside, Rivonia and Sandown, to the office parks of Woodmead and the complexes of Sunninghill and Paulshof. Sandton stands are full of things a falling limb must not touch: a pool, a koi pond, a glass entertainment area, a neighbour's roof over a shared wall. That is the work our rigging is built for.
We have been felling trees across Gauteng for ten years, we are fully insured on every job, and you get a written price before any chainsaw starts, with clean-up included. If a storm has already put a tree on your roof, skip the quote and call 083 761 7228; our emergency tree removal crew makes it safe first.

The Trees We Take Down in Sandton
Sandton's older suburbs were planted out decades ago with big exotics that are now at the end of their lives, and each one fails in its own way. Knowing which tree you have tells us how it has to come down.
- check_circlePlane trees and pin oaks: huge, heavy, and common in Hyde Park, Sandhurst and Illovo. Their limbs are dense and drop hard, so they come down in small rigged sections over a garden.
- check_circleTipuanas (pride of Bolivia): shallow-rooted, and they lift paving, pool surrounds and boundary walls. Often the roots are as much of the job as the crown.
- check_circleLiquidambars and cedars: brittle in wind, and known for dropping big limbs onto entertainment areas without warning. These we assess before every storm season.
- check_circleJacarandas: beautiful, invasive, and everywhere. On your own property they come out freely. The one on the pavement is the City's.
- check_circleBlue gums and other gum trees: the giants, usually on boundary walls or the edges of the bigger Sandhurst and Inanda stands. Full-day rigging jobs.
If a tree is sound and only one limb is the problem, crown reduction and pruning is cheaper than removal, and our arborist will tell you which yours needs.
Sandhurst, Hyde Park and the Acre Stands
The old Sandton suburbs were laid out on stands of 4,000 square metres and more, and a property in Sandhurst, Hyde Park, Inanda or Atholl often carries thirty to sixty mature trees. On a stand like that the question is rarely one tree. It is which three or four of the sixty are the ones that will fail next, and how to take them out without a chipper crossing the lawn or a log landing on the irrigation.
We approach these stands as a set. Our arborist walks the property first and ranks the trees by risk, so you remove the ones that need to go this year and budget for the rest. The crew then works from the back of the stand forward, with sections lowered onto boards where they have to cross paving, and the chipper parked where the gardener and the house staff can still get in and out. Owners who want the whole stand maintained on a cycle rather than tree by tree can see our estate and commercial tree maintenance service.
Office Parks, Hotels and Sectional Title in Sandton Central, Rivonia and Woodmead
Sandton has more commercial tree work than any other suburb we cover. Office parks along Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive and the Woodmead Drive strip were landscaped in the 1990s and 2000s with fast-growing trees that are now over parking bays, through perimeter fencing and into the fibre and electrical reticulation. Hotels and shopping centres in Sandown have mature street-facing trees that need reducing before a limb lands on a guest's car.
Commercial work in Sandton runs around the building, not the other way round. We work early mornings, weekends and public holidays so the basement parking and the main entrance stay open, keep the crew inside a cordoned zone, and where there is no drop zone at all we bring the sections down inside a closed-off area or arrange a crane. Body corporates with large sectional title blocks in Sandown, Morningside and Rivonia can put the common property trees on a schedule with us rather than dealing with them one storm at a time.
Trees Along the Braamfontein Spruit and Sandspruit
Two watercourses run through Sandton. The Braamfontein Spruit comes up from Craighall through Bryanston, Rivonia and Paulshof, and the Sandspruit runs through Morningside and Rivonia to meet it. Properties backing onto either have riverine trees, usually big gums, willows and poplars, with roots in saturated ground. After a wet summer those trees lean toward the water, and a flood that scours the bank can leave a 20-metre tree standing on half a root plate.
Spruit-side removals are planned around the bank. We do not put a vehicle on soft ground, every section is rigged away from the water, and we tell you before the day where the lowering zone is. Much of the land along both spruits is City open space rather than private garden, so we check the boundary before we quote. A spruit tree that has already come down across your fence is an emergency call-out.
Estates and Complexes in Sandton
Most Sandton jobs run through a security gate. Tell us the estate or complex when you ask for a quote and we register the crew and vehicles with security in advance, work inside the body corporate's hours, and leave the site to the standard the trustees check. Some Sandton estates only allow tree work on weekends, and we schedule around that. For the estate belt north of the N1, see our Fourways and Bryanston pages, which cover Dainfern, Cedar Lakes and the Bryanston estates in their own right.

Tree Felling Prices in Sandton
Sandton prices are set by the tree and its surroundings, not the postcode, but Sandton has more of the things that push a price up: big old exotics, tight access between pools and walls, and estate rules. The ranges below are the same ones we use across Gauteng.
| Tree size | Typical height | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Small tree | Up to 5m | R850 to R2,500 |
| Medium tree | 5m to 10m | R2,500 to R6,500 |
| Large tree | 10m to 20m | R6,500 to R15,000 |
| Extra-large tree | 20m and above | R15,000 to R25,000+ |
A large Sandton stand with several trees to remove is priced as one job, which brings the cost per tree down. Stump grinding is quoted as its own line so you only pay for it if you want it. See the full breakdown on our tree felling prices page, use the estimator below for a quick figure, and send photos for a written quote.

The tree on the verge outside your Sandton wall belongs to the City of Johannesburg, and only Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo may prune or remove it. A protected indigenous species on your own property needs a licence under the National Forests Act. Most of Sandton's big trees are exotics, so the second rule rarely applies, but we check both before we cut. The detail, including fines and who to report a dangerous street tree to, is on our Johannesburg tree felling page and in our guide to tree felling permits and bylaws in Gauteng.
Tree Felling Sandton FAQ
How much does it cost to fell a tree in Sandton?
expand_more
From around R850 for a small tree with clear access, R2,500 to R6,500 for a medium tree, R6,500 to R15,000 for a large tree over a roof or pool, and R15,000 and up for the biggest gums. Several trees on one stand are priced as one job. Use the estimator on this page for a quick range, then send photos for a written quote.
Can you fell a tree next to my pool or entertainment area?
expand_more
Yes, this is most of our Sandton work. We rig from the trunk and lower every section by rope onto boards or a protected spot, so nothing drops onto the tiles, the pool cover or the deck.
Do you handle a whole stand with many trees?
expand_more
Yes. On the big Sandhurst and Hyde Park stands our arborist ranks the trees by risk first, so you remove the few that need to go now and plan the rest. Multi-tree jobs are priced as one job.
Can you do tree work at an office park or hotel in Sandton Central?
expand_more
Yes. We work early mornings, weekends and public holidays so parking and entrances stay open, keep the crew inside a cordoned area, and arrange a crane where there is no drop zone. Body corporates can put common property trees on a maintenance schedule.
Can you work in a secure estate?
expand_more
Yes. Give us the estate name and we arrange security clearance, gate registration and working hours in advance. If your estate only allows tree work on weekends, we schedule around that.
My property backs onto the Braamfontein Spruit. Can you remove a tree on the bank?
expand_more
Yes. We keep vehicles off the soft ground, rig every section away from the water, and check whether the tree stands on your land or on City open space before we quote.
What about a tree near City Power lines?
expand_more
Where a tree is touching or overhanging a live line, we do not cut until City Power has made the line safe, and we tell you how that is arranged. We plan every drop away from live cable.
