Tree Felling Guys lowering a tree section on a rope in a sloped Roodepoort garden

Tree Felling in Roodepoort

Tree felling in Roodepoort is what we do: we cut the tree down, take every branch and log away, and grind out the stump if you want it gone. Sloped gardens in Roodekrans and Kloofendal, big old trees in Florida and Discovery, rows of gum trees on the plots out past Ruimsig, we take on all of them.

Our base in Cosmo City sits on Roodepoort's northern edge, next door to Honeydew and Zandspruit, so no part of Roodepoort is a long drive for our crew. Whether the tree is leaning over a retaining wall in Constantia Kloof, dropping limbs onto a Florida roof, or standing in a row of thirty along a Ruimsig paddock fence, it is work we are set up for.

You are hiring a Gauteng tree felling company with ten years behind it and public liability insurance on every site. We price from photos or a site visit, put the full scope in writing before anyone starts a saw, and the crew that arrives does exactly what that quote says.

Tree Felling on Roodepoort's Ridges

A large part of Roodepoort is built on rock. Roodekrans, Kloofendal, Constantia Kloof, Helderkruin, Wilgeheuwel, Radiokop, Lindhaven, and Strubensvallei climb the ridges, and gardens there are terraced, sloped, and held up by retaining walls. Trees on those stands grow into cracks in the rock, lean downhill toward the house below, and are almost never reachable by a vehicle.

Slope changes the whole job. Nothing gets dropped, because a log that lands on a gradient keeps rolling, so every section is lowered on a rope and walked to the street by hand or winched up the slope. We plan the lowering zone around the retaining walls first, since a heavy log landing on the high side of a wall can push it over. It takes longer than the same tree on flat ground, and we tell you that up front rather than discovering it on the day.

Stumps in Rock: What Can and Cannot Be Ground

Honesty matters here, because it affects what you are paying for. A stump sitting in soil can be ground well below the surface. A stump whose roots have wrapped around ridge rock can only be ground down to where the rock starts, because grinder teeth and quartzite do not mix. On many ridge properties that still means flush with the ground, which is what most people want. Where it does not, we tell you before we quote, not after. The full picture is on our stump grinding and removal page.

Florida, Discovery, and the Older West

Florida, Florida Park, Discovery, Horison, Maraisburg, Roodepoort Central, and Hamberg grew up around the gold mines, and some of the trees on those stands are close to a hundred years old. Pepper trees, cypresses, pines, and jacarandas planted by the first owners now tower over houses built much later, and old pepper trees in particular are prone to heavy limbs splitting away without warning.

The good news on these older, wider stands is space. Where there is a clear drop zone, part of the tree can come down in larger pieces, which is quicker and cheaper than a full dismantle. Where a limb hangs over the roof, that part is still rigged and lowered. Plenty of these old trees are sound apart from one bad limb, and for those crown reduction and pruning buys years. Whether yours is one of them is a call for our arborist, who will give you a straight answer either way.

Smallholdings and Plots

Ruimsig, Roodekrans, Zonnehoewe, Kimbult, Princess, Harveston, and the Honeydew holdings were farmed long before they were subdivided, and many still have the gum tree windbreaks the original owners planted. Those rows are now 25 to 30 metres tall, dropping branches across driveways and paddocks, and a single storm can put three of them across a fence line. When that happens, our emergency tree removal crew is a short drive away, because Cosmo City borders the Honeydew plots.

Holding work is usually several trees at once, often with open ground to fell into, which brings the cost per tree down. We regularly combine it with alien and invasive tree removal for wattle and syringa thickets, and land clearing where a plot is being prepared for building. Several gum tree species, all wattles, and syringas are listed invasive species, and landowners are expected to control listed invaders on their property, so clearing them is often doing yourself a favour twice.

If you have a fireplace or a braai, you can keep the timber. We cut it to length and stack it wherever you want it, and not having to haul it away lowers the quote. Anything you do not want goes with our green waste removal.

Estates and Complexes

Ruimsig Country Estate, Eagle Canyon Golf Estate, Willowbrook, and the complexes across Wilgeheuwel and Weltevreden Park each have their own gate procedures and working hours. We register the crew and vehicles with security ahead of time and work to the estate's rules. Estate managers and trustees who want common property trees handled on a schedule can see our estate and commercial tree maintenance service.

Tree Felling Prices in Roodepoort

The only price you will find published on this search starts at R2,000. Ours starts lower: a small tree on flat, open ground from around R850. From there, Roodepoort has two things that push a price up and one that brings it down. Slope and rock add time, because every piece is carried or winched. Height adds rigging. Space brings it down, which is why a gum tree on a holding with room to fell costs far less per metre than the same tree on a Kloofendal terrace.

Our tree felling prices page sets out the ranges by tree size. For your tree, send us photos with a note on whether it is on a slope, and you will have a written figure back.

Is There Free Tree Felling in Roodepoort?

People search for it, so here is the straight answer. No tree company fells a garden tree for nothing. What is free is the pavement tree outside your property: it belongs to the City of Johannesburg, and pruning or removing it is Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo's responsibility, not yours. If one is dead, leaning, or lifting the road, reporting it costs you nothing. Do not have anyone cut it without the City's approval, because the fine lands on you. For trees on your own land, our permits and bylaws guide covers when anyone else's permission is needed.

Tree Felling Roodepoort FAQ

How much does it cost to have a tree felled in Roodepoort?

expand_more

From around R850 for a small tree on open, level ground. A large tree on a ridge property, where every section has to be lowered and carried out, costs several thousand rand, and a row of gum trees on a holding is priced as one job, which works out cheaper per tree. Photos and a note about the slope get you a written quote.

Is it cheaper to trim a tree or cut it down?

expand_more

Trimming is cheaper on the day, but not always over time. A healthy tree that only has a problem limb is worth trimming. A tree that is leaning, hollow, or already dropping big branches will cost you a trim every year and a removal in the end, so taking it out once is usually the cheaper choice. An arborist inspection settles it before you spend anything on either.

What is the cheapest time of year for tree removal?

expand_more

The dry months, roughly May to August. Crews are less stretched after the storm season, holdings are dry enough to drive onto without churning up the ground, and deciduous trees are bare, which makes them lighter and quicker to dismantle. A dangerous tree should not wait for winter, though.

Will a gum tree grow back after it is cut down?

expand_more

Very often, yes. Gum trees, wattles, and syringas all send up new shoots from a cut stump, which is why holdings fill up with thickets where a single tree once stood. Grinding the stump out, or treating it straight after felling, stops the regrowth. We will tell you which suits your site.

How close is too close for a tree next to a house?

expand_more

There is no single safe distance. The questions that matter are whether the tree could reach the house if it failed, and whether its roots are getting into the foundations, drains, or paving. A tree tall enough to hit the roof that also shows a lean, deadwood, or lifting ground around the base should be looked at before the next storm season.

Send Us a Photo of the Tree

Take a couple of photos of the tree, including one that shows the slope or access, tell us the suburb, and you will get a written quote with everything listed. If you would rather we walked the property first, we will come out and look. Before you decide, read what other customers said about the work on our reviews page.
