Tree Felling in Krugersdorp

Tree felling in Krugersdorp is work we do across the whole of Mogale City, from the ridge stands of Noordheuwel and Rant-en-Dal to the gum rows on the plots out toward Muldersdrift and Tarlton. There is no travel fee anywhere in Krugersdorp or on the plots around it. We take the tree down, remove every branch and log, and grind out the stump if you want it gone.

Krugersdorp is not Johannesburg, and that matters for a tree job. The street-tree rules, the people you report to and, on many plots, the electricity supplier are all different. This page covers what changes, what a Krugersdorp job costs, and how we handle the ridges and the smallholdings. We have done this for ten years, we are fully insured on every site, and you get a written, itemised quote before anyone starts a saw.

Krugersdorp Falls Under Mogale City, Not Johannesburg

Most tree felling advice online is written for Johannesburg, where only City Parks may touch a street tree. That rule does not apply here. Krugersdorp, Muldersdrift, Kagiso and the surrounding plots fall under the Mogale City Local Municipality, so the tree on the pavement outside your wall belongs to Mogale City, and it is Mogale City you contact before anyone prunes or removes it.

Trees inside your boundary are yours, with one national exception: species on the protected list under the National Forests Act need a licence before anyone cuts them, wherever you live. On the West Rand that occasionally means an indigenous tree on a plot that was never cleared. If you are not sure what you have, we check the species before we quote. Our guide to tree felling permits and bylaws in Gauteng has the detail.

If your property is inside the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site or an estate near it, check your title deed and estate rules before large-scale clearing. Some properties carry environmental conditions that a normal suburban stand does not.

Ridge Stands in Noordheuwel, Rant-en-Dal and Monument

The names give it away. Noordheuwel means north hill, and Rant-en-Dal means ridge and valley. Much of north Krugersdorp is built on the Witwatersrand ridge, with homes stepped down the slope and big trees planted on terraces above them.

On these stands, the same tree costs more to remove than it would on flat ground, for two reasons. The tree usually stands above the house, so every heavy section has to be roped and lowered rather than dropped. And the driveway is often too steep for a loaded truck, so sections get carried to the street. We price both in up front. Our approach on sloped, rocky ground is the same one we use on Roodepoort's ridges, next door to the east.

Smallholdings Out to Muldersdrift, Tarlton and Lanseria

West and north of town, Krugersdorp becomes plots: Muldersdrift, Tarlton, Lanseria, Kromdraai and the holdings along the R28 and R563. Most were farmed before they were subdivided, and many still have gum and pine windbreaks that are now 25 metres tall, wattle thickets along the fences, and dead trees nobody has dealt with in years.

Plot work is a different kind of job from a town stand. There is usually open ground to fell into, so a row of trees costs far less per tree than the same number of separate garden jobs. We clear listed invaders such as gum, wattle and syringa through our alien and invasive tree removal work, and if you want the timber for firewood, we cut it to length and leave it, which lowers the quote.

Fire season. The West Rand dries out from June to September, and veld fires run fast through a plot with dead wood and invasive thickets along the boundary. Clearing dead trees and thinning invaders before winter is the cheapest fire protection a plot owner can buy, and it is quieter work for us before the summer storm rush.

Trees Near Power Lines: Who to Call

In Krugersdorp town, Mogale City supplies most of the electricity. On many smallholdings, Eskom supplies the line directly. If a tree is touching or leaning on a line, call whoever bills you for electricity before you call us, and stay well back. We do not cut any tree that could reach a live line until the supplier has made it safe. Once they have, we take the tree down and clear the branches. Our emergency tree felling page covers what to do in the first ten minutes.

Tree Felling Prices in Krugersdorp

There is no travel fee to Krugersdorp. After that, the tree sets the price, not the suburb.

Tree size Typical height Typical price
Small treeUp to 5mR850 to R2,500
Medium tree5m to 10mR2,500 to R6,500
Large tree10m to 20mR6,500 to R15,000

On a Krugersdorp job, three things move the number most. A ridge stand where the tree stands above the house pushes a tree toward the top of its band. A plot with open ground and a row of trees brings the cost per tree down. And keeping the timber instead of having us haul it lowers the quote on any job. Stump grinding is a separate line, so you only pay for it if you want it. Full ranges are on our tree felling prices page, and photos get you a written figure, usually the same day.

What Else We Do in Krugersdorp

Felling is most of our work here, but plot owners and homeowners usually need more than one job done. We trim and reduce trees you want to keep, take out palms, grind stumps flush so you can pave or plant, and our arborist checks a tree before you decide to fell it. Everything is part of the same tree felling and tree care service we run across Gauteng.

Tree Felling Krugersdorp FAQ

How much does tree felling cost in Krugersdorp?

expand_more

From around R850 for a small tree with easy access to R25,000 or more for a very large tree over a building. A row of gums on an open plot is priced as one job and costs less per tree. There is no travel fee to Krugersdorp.

Who do I contact about a pavement tree in Krugersdorp?

expand_more

Mogale City, not Johannesburg City Parks. Krugersdorp falls under the Mogale City Local Municipality, which owns the street trees here. Do not have anyone cut a verge tree without the municipality's approval.

Do I need a permit to cut down a tree on my property in Krugersdorp?

expand_more

Not for most garden trees on your own property. A pavement tree needs Mogale City's approval, and a species on the national protected list needs a licence under the National Forests Act. We check both before we cut.

A tree is on the power line at my plot. Who do I call?

expand_more

Whoever bills you for electricity: Mogale City in town, or Eskom on many smallholdings. Stay back and treat the line as live. Once the supplier has made it safe, we remove the tree.

Can you fell trees on ridge properties in Noordheuwel and Rant-en-Dal?

expand_more

Yes. On a sloped stand we rope and lower every heavy section rather than dropping it, and carry sections to the street where the truck cannot reach. It takes longer than flat ground, and we price that in before we start.

Do you work on smallholdings in Muldersdrift and Tarlton?

expand_more

Yes. Plot work is often several trees with open ground to fell into, which brings the cost per tree down. We also clear wattle and other invaders and can leave the timber cut to length for firewood.

When is the best time to fell trees in Krugersdorp?

expand_more

For plots, late autumn and early winter, before the dry fire season and after the summer storms. For a dangerous tree, now. A leaning or dead tree should not wait for the season.
