Tree Felling in Randpark Ridge
Tree felling in Randpark Ridge is regular work for Tree Felling Guys, inside the northwest area we reach first and fastest. We take down trees that have outgrown their stands, overgrown conifer screens, and trees whose roots have reached the drains, then clear every branch and log and grind out the stump if you want it gone.
Most of Randpark Ridge was built in the 1970s and 80s, and so were most of its trees. They are now 40 to 50 years old: too big for the spot they were planted in, and failing in ways that are specific to that age. This page covers what those are, what a job here costs, and how we handle the golf course boundary. We have done this for ten years, we are fully insured, and you get a written, itemised quote before anyone starts a saw.
Trees From the Year the House Was Built
The older Randburg suburbs have 1950s jacarandas and planes that are near the end of their lives. Randpark Ridge is a generation younger. When the suburb went up, owners planted fast-growing trees to give a new garden shade and privacy quickly, and planted them close to the house, the wall and the drive because a sapling looks small.
Forty-odd years later, the problems we see on a Randpark Ridge call-out are predictable:
- check_circleA tree a metre from the house with its crown on the roof and its roots under the foundation.
- check_circleConifer screens planted as a privacy hedge that are now a solid wall of trees taller than the double-storey next door.
- check_circleRoots in the sewer line from trees planted beside the drains.
- check_circleFast-growing species such as silver oaks, Brazilian peppers and syringas that grew quickly and are now weak-wooded and shedding limbs.
None of these are heritage trees worth saving at any cost. Most are the wrong tree in the wrong place, and the right answer is usually to remove it and, if you want shade back, plant something suited to the spot.
Overgrown Conifer and Cypress Screens
The single most common Randpark Ridge job is a row of conifers along a boundary. Cypresses and similar conifers were planted all over this suburb as quick privacy screens, kept trimmed for a few years, then left. Each one is now 12 to 15 metres tall, the row is dense and heavy, and the trees lean on each other and on the boundary wall.
A conifer row is a different job from a single tree. The trees are close together, so there is rarely room to drop any of them; each is taken down in sections from the top, one tree at a time, so the rest of the row does not push the wall over while we work. Conifers also do not regrow from a cut stump, so once the row is down and the stumps are ground, it is gone for good. If you want privacy back, a lower, slower hedge planted a metre off the wall will do the job without the same problem in twenty years. Where the row is healthy and only too tall, reducing it is an option, and we will tell you honestly whether the trees will take it.
Roots in the Drains
Randpark Ridge's sewer and stormwater pipes went in when the houses did, and many are the jointed clay or older pipes of that era. Tree roots find the joints, grow into them following the moisture, and slowly block or crack the line. The first sign is usually a slow drain or a blocked sewer that keeps coming back after the plumber clears it.
Clearing the pipe fixes the symptom. Removing the tree, or at least the one causing it, fixes the cause. We fell the tree and grind the stump well below the surface, which stops new roots heading for the pipe, and you can then have the line repaired or relined without it filling up again. If you are not sure which tree is the culprit, our arborist can look at what is planted near the line before you decide.
Stands Backing Onto Randpark Golf Club
Many Randpark Ridge stands back onto Randpark Golf Club. Trees on the club's side of the fence belong to the club, not to you and not to the City, and branches and roots cross the boundary in both directions. You may cut back what crosses onto your property, at your cost, but you may not fell or cut into a tree on the club's land.
Before we quote on a boundary tree, we check which side it stands on. If a club tree is a real danger to your house, the route is the club's management, and our arborist can put the risk in writing for you to take to them. For pavement trees, which belong to the City of Johannesburg, the rules and contact numbers are on our Johannesburg tree felling page.
Complexes and Sectional Title
Randpark Ridge has a lot of townhouse complexes, and common-property trees in a complex need the trustees' approval before anyone cuts. We supply a written quote and proof of insurance for the body corporate, and we work inside the complex's hours and gate rules. The way we run complex jobs is the same as in the townhouse belt on our Randburg page.

Tree Felling Prices in Randpark Ridge
There is no travel fee to Randpark Ridge. After that, the tree sets the price.
| Tree size | Typical height | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Small tree | Up to 5m | R850 to R2,500 |
| Medium tree | 5m to 10m | R2,500 to R6,500 |
| Large tree | 10m to 20m | R6,500 to R15,000 |
| Extra-large tree | 20m and above | R15,000 to R25,000+ |
A conifer row is priced as one job, not tree by tree, which brings the cost per tree well down. A tree on the house or over a pool sits toward the top of its band because every section has to be roped down. Stump grinding is its own line, and on a drain job it is the part that actually stops the roots, so we recommend it there. See our tree felling prices page for the full ranges, and send photos for a written figure.
Storms in the Northwest
Randpark Ridge is inside our 60-minute emergency zone. A summer storm that drops a tree on your roof, car or wall is a call to 083 761 7228, not a quote request. Photograph the damage before anything moves, and see our emergency tree felling page for what your insurer will want.
Felling is most of what we do here, but we also reduce and trim trees you want to keep, take out palms, and run the same tree felling service across the rest of Gauteng.
Tree Felling Randpark Ridge FAQ
How much does tree felling cost in Randpark Ridge?
expand_more
From around R850 for a small tree with easy access to R25,000 or more for a very large tree over a building. A row of conifers is priced as one job, which works out cheaper per tree. There is no travel fee.
How much does it cost to remove a row of conifers?
expand_more
It depends on the number of trees, their height and how close they stand to the wall. A row is quoted as one job rather than tree by tree, so the cost per tree is well below a single removal. Send a photo of the full row for a written figure.
Will my conifers grow back if I cut them down?
expand_more
No. Most conifers, including cypresses, do not regrow from a cut stump. Once the row is felled and the stumps are ground, it is gone. That is also why topping a conifer screen rarely works: the cut top does not grow back.
A tree's roots are blocking my sewer. Will removing the tree fix it?
expand_more
Removing the tree and grinding the stump stops new roots reaching the pipe. The existing damage in the pipe still has to be cleared or repaired by a plumber, but once the tree is gone, it will not fill up again.
The tree hanging over my wall is on the golf course. Can I cut it?
expand_more
You can cut back what crosses onto your property, at your cost. You cannot fell or cut into a tree on the golf club's land. If it is dangerous, take it up with the club, and our arborist can put the risk in writing.
Do you need the body corporate's permission to fell a tree in a complex?
expand_more
For a tree on common property, yes. We give you a written quote and proof of insurance to submit to the trustees, and we work inside the complex's hours and access rules.
